Sylvie Firestone, 5th Dan, Shidoin discovered her passion for Aikido in 1994 at the New York Aikikai where she had the privilege of training under the direction of shihans Yoshimitsu Yamada and the late Seiichi Sugano, respectively. In addition to Aikido, Firestone sensei teaches Battōdojustu (Japanese swordsmanship): Toyama Ryu Battōdojutsu, Zen Nihon Batto Do Renmei, and its equivalent, the US BattoDo Federation curriculum. To this day, Firestone sensei continues to hold a weekly teaching position at the NY Aikikai, the United States Aikido Federation headquarters.įirestone sensei and his wife Sylvie founded Aikido of Westchester in 1997, where he teaches seven days a week. Ten years later, he founded City Aikido of Los Angeles.įirestone sensei later joined the New York Aikikai in 1993 as a live-in student (ushi deshi) and trained intensely under Yoshimitsu Yamada shihan and the late Seiichi Sugano shihan, both direct students of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba. Say within an hour's driving distance? Cornell does has a Kendo club, but they seem to make it pretty clear that they're a sport kendo association, and NOT a kenjutsu school, so I'm pretty sure that's not what I'm looking for. Even with Cornell's resources, I've not found much in the way of Kenjutsu or Iaido/jutsu in the area. Hi, During college I spent a couple years learning the basics of kenjutsu (Shinkendo), but eventually living 300 miles away from the dojo got to me and I pretty much gave up trining. With my stability, I'm now looking into picking up the sword again. It's been a few years now, and I'm a graduate student at Cornell, which means I'll be permenantly living in Ithaca for at least a few more years.
